Di tengah krisis yang melanda Hastinapura, Duryodana berdiri tegak di alun-alun, menyerukan penghematan. Hutang kerajaan menumpuk, bahan bakar semakin langka. Dengan suara lantang, ia menetapkan aturan ketat; bahan bakar bersubsidi hanya untuk rakyat miskin dan hanya dijual di tempat tertentu agar tak diselewengkan. Rakyat pun berbondong-bondong mengantre, berjam-jam menanti dengan harapan tipis. Namun, sering kali mereka pulang dengan tangan kosong.
Sementara itu, pasar gelap justru semakin ramai, bahan bakar dijual dengan harga melambung, memaksa rakyat mengorbankan sisa harta mereka demi sejumput api. Desas-desus menyebar bahwa bahan bakar ditimbun di tempat tersembunyi. Kelompok ibu-ibu mendatangi Sri Krishna, meminta keadilan. Dengan langkah tenang, Krishna membawa mereka ke sebuah rumah megah. Di sana, bau gas menyengat. Saat pintu didobrak, puluhan tabung gas tersusun rapi, bersama tumpukan minyak.
Betapa ironinya, rumah itu milik istri Duryodana, pejabat yang paling vokal tentang penghematan. Keserakahan telah mengaburkan nurani, membuatnya buta akan derita rakyat. Penguasa yang paling vokal soal moral orang yang paling pertama mengkhianatinya.
